Complete Tattoo Aftercare Guide, Heal Your Adelaide Tattoo Safely
Proper tattoo aftercare makes a big difference to how your tattoo heals.
Once you leave Inkdulgence Tattoo, your artist has done their part. From there, how you clean, protect and look after your tattoo will affect how comfortably it heals and how well it settles.
This guide explains how to care for your fresh tattoo, what to avoid, what is normal during healing, and when to contact the studio.
Follow your artist’s advice first
Different tattoos may need slightly different aftercare depending on the size, placement, style, skin type and wrap used.
Always follow the advice given by your artist on the day. If anything in this guide is different from what your artist told you, follow your artist’s instructions.
If you are unsure, send us a DM or enquiry and we can help.
Leave the wrap on
After your tattoo, your artist will clean the area and cover it with wrap or a protective dressing.
Leave the wrap on for the time your artist recommends. This may vary depending on the tattoo and the type of wrap used.
If you are given regular wrap, it is usually removed after a few hours. If you are given a second skin style dressing, your artist will explain how long to leave it on and how to remove it safely.
Do not remove the wrap early unless your artist has told you to.
Wash your hands first
Before touching your tattoo, always wash your hands properly.
Fresh tattoos are open skin, so clean hands matter. Avoid touching your tattoo unless you are cleaning it or applying aftercare.
Gently wash your tattoo
Once the wrap is removed, gently wash the tattoo with clean hands, lukewarm water and a mild fragrance-free soap.
Do not scrub the tattoo. Do not use a face washer, loofah or exfoliating product.
After washing, gently pat the tattoo dry with clean paper towel or let it air dry. Do not rub it with a bath towel, especially while it is fresh.
Apply a thin layer of aftercare
Once the tattoo is clean and dry, apply a very thin layer of tattoo aftercare cream or balm recommended by your artist.
Less is more. Your tattoo should not be shiny, wet, greasy or smothered in product. Too much aftercare can clog the skin and slow healing.
Apply only enough to stop the tattoo from feeling overly dry or tight.
Keep it clean and dry
For the first stage of healing, keep your tattoo clean, dry and protected.
Avoid dirty environments, pet hair, dust, gym equipment, gardening, work grime and anything that may rub or contaminate the tattoo.
If your job or lifestyle makes this difficult, ask your artist for advice before leaving the studio.
Do not pick or scratch
Itching, flaking and light scabbing can be normal.
Do not pick, scratch or pull flakes off your tattoo. Let them come away naturally. Picking can pull ink out, cause patchy healing and increase the chance of scarring.
If the tattoo feels itchy, lightly moisturise with a small amount of aftercare and avoid touching it as much as possible.
Avoid swimming and soaking
Do not swim or soak your fresh tattoo until it is fully healed.
Avoid pools, spas, baths, saunas, steam rooms, oceans, rivers and lakes while the tattoo is healing. Soaking can soften the healing skin and increase the risk of irritation or infection.
Short showers are fine. Just avoid blasting the tattoo directly with hot water.
Avoid sun exposure
Keep your fresh tattoo out of direct sun while it is healing.
Sunburn on a fresh tattoo can seriously affect healing and can damage the tattoo. Cover it with loose clothing if you need to be outside.
Do not apply sunscreen to a fresh tattoo until it is fully healed. Once healed, sunscreen is one of the best ways to keep your tattoo looking good long term.
Be careful with exercise
Avoid heavy sweating, friction and stretching the tattooed area in the first few days.
Light movement is usually fine, but avoid hard gym sessions, heavy cardio, contact sport or anything that rubs the tattoo while it is fresh.
For larger tattoos, sensitive placements or areas that move a lot, you may need to take a little longer before training properly again.
Wear loose clothing
Wear clean, loose clothing over the tattoo while it heals.
Tight clothing can rub, stick to the tattoo, irritate the skin and affect the healing process.
For leg tattoos, avoid tight jeans or leggings early on.
For ribs, chest, back or stomach tattoos, avoid clothing that digs into the area.
For foot or ankle tattoos, be careful with shoes and socks rubbing.
What is normal while a tattoo heals?
Some redness, warmth, tenderness, swelling, plasma, ink weeping, flaking and itching can be normal in the early stages.
Your tattoo may look shiny, dull, cloudy or slightly flaky while it settles. This is part of the healing process.
Everyone heals differently. Size, placement, skin type, aftercare, lifestyle and the type of tattoo can all affect healing.

How long does a tattoo take to heal?
Most tattoos settle on the surface within about two to three weeks, but deeper healing can take longer.
Small tattoos may feel normal fairly quickly. Larger tattoos, heavy shading, colour work, cover-ups and areas that move a lot can take longer to fully settle.
Even once the tattoo looks healed, keep looking after the skin.
Can I moisturise after it heals?
Yes.
Once your tattoo is fully healed, regular moisturising can help the skin stay healthy and keep the tattoo looking better.
You do not need to overdo it. Just use a gentle moisturiser that suits your skin.
How do I keep my tattoo looking good long term?
Once healed, the biggest things are:
Keep it out of harsh sun where possible
Use sunscreen when exposed to sun
Keep the skin moisturised
Avoid picking or damaging the skin
Follow your artist’s advice if touch-ups are needed
Good aftercare does not end the day your tattoo stops peeling. Long-term skin care helps your tattoo age better.

Common Tattoo Aftercare Questions
How long does a tattoo take to heal?
Small tattoos generally heal in 2–3 weeks, while larger pieces may take up to 3 months. Healing time depends on size, placement, and your skin recovery.
Can I use natural oils like coconut oil or aloe vera?
Yes, these are excellent for tattooed skin.
Can I apply makeup on a new tattoo?
No. Wait until fully healed to avoid skin reactions and infection.
How do I prevent fading?
Moisturise regularly and protect healed tattoos with sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher).
Can tattoos get infected?
Yes, if proper hygiene is not maintained. Washing with antibacterial, mild soap, using sterile bandages, and avoiding swimming or scratching minimises risk.
