Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a tattoo cost? Our studio minimum is $150, with truly tiny pieces occasionally from $100. Smaller tattoos are quoted by the piece, so you know the full price before booking. Larger work is booked by half day or full day, with senior artist day rates from $1,000 to $1,300. The full breakdown is in our guide to tattoo prices in Adelaide.
It's my first tattoo and I'm nervous. Is that normal? Completely normal, and some of our favourite clients started out terrified in the chair. Your artist will walk you through every step, you can ask as many questions as you want, and nothing happens until you're ready. We've written a full guide to getting your first tattoo covering exactly what to expect.
Does getting a tattoo hurt? Yes, but usually less than you've built it up in your head, and it varies a lot by placement. Outer arm, shoulder, calf and thigh are on the easier end. Ribs, feet, hands and inner arm sting more. Your artist will be straight with you about your placement before you commit.
Can I use numbing cream? You can, but talk to us first. Numbing cream affects the skin, can affect how the tattoo heals, and using it voids your free touch-up. The full pros and cons are in our numbing cream guide.
Do I need to book or can I walk in? Walk-ins are welcome for smaller pieces when artists are available. Custom work, cover-ups and specific artists are best booked ahead so your design gets proper prep time. More on how walk-ins work.
How do I prepare for my appointment? Eat a proper meal, drink water, sleep well and skip the big night out beforehand. Wear clothing that gives easy access to the placement, and bring snacks, water and headphones for longer sessions. Full rundown in our tattoo preparation guide.
How do I look after a new tattoo? Keep it clean, don't pick or scratch, stay out of direct sun and skip swimming while it heals. The first couple of weeks decide how your tattoo looks long term. Step-by-step instructions are in our tattoo aftercare guide.
Can you cover up my old tattoo? Usually yes, and we'll give you an honest read at a free consultation. Some cover-ups benefit from laser fading first, but many don't need it at all. Send clear photos in natural light and we'll tell you what's actually realistic.
Can I bring a friend? One support person is fine for most sessions. Just check with your artist when booking, since space varies depending on the day.
How old do I need to be? 18, no exceptions, with valid photo ID like a driver's licence or passport.
Do you take deposits? Yes, a deposit is required to secure every booking, and it comes off the final price of your tattoo. Deposit amounts and rescheduling terms are in our studio policies.
Do you do scalp micropigmentation? Yes. Inkdulgence is home to Signature Scalp, Adelaide's dedicated SMP specialist. Free consultations available, more info here.
