Getting Your First Tattoo in Adelaide: What to Expect
Thinking about your first tattoo and feeling a bit nervous? Good. That means you're taking it seriously.
Almost everyone who walks into Inkdulgence for their first piece has the same questions running through their head. Will it hurt? What if I pick the wrong design? What actually happens on the day? This guide walks you through the whole thing, from first message to healed tattoo, so there are no surprises.
Being Nervous Is Normal
Let's get this one out of the way first. Nerves before a first tattoo are completely normal, and honestly, some of our favourite clients started out terrified in the chair.
Your artist has done this hundreds of times. They'll talk you through every step before any needle touches skin, you can ask as many questions as you want, and nothing happens until you're ready. If it helps, come in for a free consultation first. It's just a conversation, no commitment, no pressure.
Choosing Your Design
You don't need to arrive with a perfect design. You need a direction.
Some people come in with a clear concept and reference images. Others have a rough idea, a subject they want included, or just a style they like. Your artist's job is to turn that into a tattoo that works for your body, your placement and the long term. That's what custom design means, and we've covered it properly in our guide to custom tattoos in Adelaide.
One honest tip: be open to your artist's input on size and placement. A design that's too small or too detailed for the spot won't heal well or age well, and a good artist will tell you that upfront rather than just take your money.
How Much Will It Cost?
Our studio minimum is $150, with truly tiny pieces occasionally from $100. Smaller tattoos are quoted by the piece, so you know the full price before booking. Larger work is booked by half day or full day.
First tattoos are often on the smaller side, so for most first-timers you're looking at the by-the-piece end. For the full breakdown, read our guide to tattoo prices in Adelaide.
A deposit is required to lock in your booking, and it comes off the final price of your tattoo. You'll need to be 18 or over with valid photo ID. No exceptions on either.
Does It Hurt?
Yes. But usually less than you've built it up in your head, and it varies a lot by placement.
Outer arm, shoulder, calf and thigh are on the easier end, which is part of why they're popular first tattoo spots. Ribs, feet, hands and inner arm sting more. Your artist will be straight with you about your placement before you commit.
Most people describe it as an annoying scratch rather than real pain, and your body settles into it after the first few minutes. If you're worried about it, mention it at your consult. And if you're thinking about numbing cream, read our numbing cream guide first and talk to us before using anything, because it can affect healing and it voids your free touch-up.
Walk In or Book Ahead?
For a first tattoo, it depends on the piece.
If it's small and simple, a walk-in can work when artists are available, and there's something to be said for just getting it done before you overthink it. More on how walk-ins work here.
If it's custom, detailed, or you want a specific artist, book ahead. It gives your artist time to prepare the design properly, and it gives you time to see it before the day. Meet our artists to see whose work suits your idea.
How to Prepare for the Day
The basics matter more than people think. Eat a proper meal beforehand, drink water, get a decent sleep the night before, and skip the big night out. Alcohol thins your blood and makes the whole process harder on you and your artist.
Wear clothing that gives easy access to the placement. For longer sessions, bring snacks, water, headphones and a phone charger. The full rundown is in our tattoo preparation guide.
What Actually Happens on the Day
Here's the part nobody explains, so we will.
You'll check in, sort the paperwork and confirm the design with your artist. They'll print a stencil, position it on your skin, and you'll check it in the mirror. This is your moment to speak up about placement, and you should. Nothing is tattooed until you're happy with where it sits.
Then your artist sets up. Fresh single-use needles opened in front of you, sterilised equipment, gloves, the lot. If you want to see it all happen, just ask. We'd rather you watch and relax than wonder and worry.
The tattooing itself starts with a small line so you can feel what it's like before committing to the full session. After that, it's just you, your artist and some good conversation, or your headphones if you'd rather zone out. Both are completely fine.
Looking After It
Your artist will explain aftercare before you leave, and the short version is simple. Keep it clean, don't pick or scratch, stay out of direct sun and skip swimming while it heals.
The first couple of weeks decide how good your tattoo looks for the next twenty years, so take it seriously. The complete step-by-step is in our tattoo aftercare guide.
FAQs: First Tattoo
What's a good first tattoo? Whatever you actually want, in a placement that's easier to sit through. Outer arm, shoulder, calf and thigh are popular first spots for a reason. Don't get something smaller or safer than you want just because it's your first. Get the right tattoo.
Can I bring a friend? Yes, one support person is fine for most sessions. Just check with your artist when booking, since space varies depending on the day.
What if I flinch or need a break? You won't ruin it. Artists work with the body, not against it, and breaks are completely normal. Just talk to your artist and they'll work with you.
Can I get tattooed if I'm sick or sunburnt? No. Reschedule if you're unwell, and sunburnt or damaged skin can't be tattooed properly. Give us notice and we'll sort a new time.
How long does a small tattoo take? Often under an hour including setup, sometimes much less. Your artist will give you a realistic estimate when quoting.
