Custom Tattoos in Adelaide: A Guide to Styles, Cover-Ups and Pricing
Looking for a custom tattoo in Adelaide? Inkdulgence Tattoo creates custom tattoos from our studio in Marden, working with clients across fine line, black and grey, realism, Japanese-inspired work, portraits, pop culture tattoos, cover-ups and larger tattoo projects.
This guide covers every style we work in, how custom design actually works, and what to expect on cost and process.
A custom tattoo should be designed for you, your idea, your placement and your long-term vision. Whether you are planning a small meaningful tattoo or a multi-session sleeve, the goal is to create something that suits your body and holds up properly over time.
At Inkdulgence, we offer both bookings and walk-ins depending on the tattoo. Simple small tattoos may be suitable for walk-ins, while larger custom work, cover-ups and pieces with a specific artist are best booked ahead.
What is a custom tattoo?
A custom tattoo is designed around your idea rather than copied directly from someone else’s tattoo.
You might come in with a clear concept, a few reference images, a rough sketch, a subject you want included, or just a general direction. Your artist can then help turn that into a tattoo design that works for the placement, size and style you want.
Custom tattoos can include:
Fine line tattoos
Black and grey tattoos
Realism tattoos
Japanese-inspired tattoos
Portrait tattoos
Pop culture tattoos
Anime and gaming tattoos
Traditional and neo-traditional tattoos
Script and lettering
Cover-ups and reworks
Sleeves, back pieces and larger projects
The best custom tattoos are not just about the image. They also consider flow, placement, skin, scale and how the tattoo will age.
Custom tattoos vs walk-in tattoos
Custom tattoos and walk-in tattoos both have their place.
Walk-ins are great for smaller, simpler tattoos that can be drawn and tattooed without a long design process. This may include small script, symbols, flash-style pieces and simple designs.
Larger custom tattoos usually need more planning. If your idea involves a sleeve, cover-up, realism, portrait, Japanese-inspired composition, detailed fine line work or a specific artist, booking ahead is the better option.

Fine line custom tattoos
Fine line tattoos are popular for clients wanting something clean, delicate and detailed.
They can work well for script, florals, small symbols, ornamental designs, minimalist pieces and subtle custom tattoos. The important thing is making sure the design is not too small or too detailed for the placement.
If needed, your artist may recommend adjusting the size, spacing or placement so the tattoo heals better and holds detail over time.

Black and grey custom tattoos
Black and grey tattoos are a strong option for clients wanting depth, contrast and a timeless look.
This style can suit realism, portraits, religious designs, Chicano-inspired work, animals, florals, memorial tattoos, dark illustrative pieces and larger custom designs.
Black and grey work relies heavily on shading, contrast and composition. A good design should be planned around the body, not just placed randomly from a reference image.
Realism, portraits and pop culture tattoos
Realism and portrait tattoos need strong reference images, careful planning and the right artist.
These tattoos can include faces, animals, movie characters, musicians, family portraits, memorial pieces, comic-inspired designs, gaming tattoos, anime references and other pop culture ideas.
Because detail matters, these tattoos usually need to be booked in rather than treated as a quick walk-in. Your artist may need time to prepare the design properly before the appointment.
You can meet our tattoo artists to see who may suit your idea best.
Japanese-inspired custom tattoos
Japanese-inspired tattoos are often larger, flowing pieces designed to work with the body.
These can include koi, dragons, tigers, snakes, florals, waves, wind bars, masks and other traditional Japanese-inspired elements. They are commonly used for sleeves, back pieces, leg sleeves and large multi-session projects.
Because these tattoos need strong composition and flow, a consultation is recommended before booking.
Cover-up tattoos and reworks
Cover-up tattoos are custom by nature.
The artist has to work with the existing tattoo, the darkness of the old ink, the shape, placement and what design will realistically cover it. A cover-up often needs to be larger, darker or more structured than the tattoo underneath.
We may also be able to tattoo over or around some scars, depending on the age, texture and condition of the skin. This is assessed during consultation so the artist can give honest advice about what is realistic.
Inkdulgence does not currently offer stretch mark camouflage or scar camouflage as a cosmetic tattoo service. Scar-related tattoo work is assessed as part of custom tattooing or cover-up work.
Do you offer tattoo removal?
Inkdulgence Tattoo does not currently offer laser tattoo removal.
If your old tattoo needs to be lightened before a cover-up, we may recommend speaking with a reputable laser removal provider first. In some cases, a cover-up may be possible without laser. In other cases, fading the old tattoo first may give you a better result.
The best first step is to send clear photos of the tattoo in natural lighting so we can let you know whether a cover-up consultation is suitable.
How much does a custom tattoo cost?
Custom tattoo pricing depends on the artist, size, detail, placement, style and time involved.
At Inkdulgence, smaller tattoos are priced by the piece, with a studio minimum of $150. Larger custom tattoos are quoted as a half day, full day or multi-session project, with senior artist day rates from $1,000 to $1,300 depending on the artist.

How to prepare for a custom tattoo
Before your tattoo appointment, make sure you eat properly, drink water, sleep well and wear suitable clothing for the placement.
For larger sessions, bring snacks, water, headphones, a phone charger and anything else that helps you sit comfortably.
If you are booked for a cover-up, sleeve, back piece or detailed custom design, make sure your references and consultation notes are sorted before the day.
You can read our full tattoo preparation guide before your appointment.
Custom tattoo aftercare
After your tattoo, your artist will explain how to look after it while it heals.
Good aftercare helps your tattoo settle properly and reduces the risk of irritation, patchy healing or unnecessary touch-ups. Keep it clean, avoid picking, stay out of direct sun while it heals and follow your artist’s instructions.
You can read our full tattoo aftercare guide for step-by-step advice.
