Tattoo Numbing Cream: Everything You Need To Know
Thinking about using tattoo numbing cream before your appointment? It is a common question, especially for larger tattoos, sensitive placements or clients who are nervous about pain.
At Inkdulgence Tattoo, our advice is simple, please check with your artist before using numbing cream.
Some artists are comfortable tattooing skin that has been numbed properly. Others may prefer you not to use it, depending on the tattoo, placement, product and how your skin reacts. The important thing is not to apply it without telling the studio first.
What is tattoo numbing cream?
Tattoo numbing cream is a topical anaesthetic applied to the skin before tattooing to reduce discomfort.
Most numbing creams use ingredients such as lidocaine or similar local anaesthetics. These products temporarily reduce sensation in the area where they are applied.
Numbing cream does not always make a tattoo painless, and it does not work the same for everyone. The effect can vary depending on the product, how it is applied, the body area, the length of the session and your skin.
Can I use numbing cream before my tattoo?
Maybe, but only after checking with your artist first.
Some tattoos may be fine with numbing cream. Others may be harder to tattoo if the cream changes the skin texture, causes swelling, makes the skin feel rubbery, or affects how the area responds during the session.
Please do not apply numbing cream before your appointment unless the studio or your artist has approved it.
If you arrive with numbing cream applied without telling us, your artist may need to assess the skin before deciding whether the tattoo can go ahead.
Why do some tattoo artists avoid numbing cream?
Some artists prefer not to tattoo over numbed skin because it can change how the skin behaves.
Possible issues include:
Skin becoming swollen or irritated
Skin texture changing during the tattoo
The stencil not holding properly
The tattoo becoming harder to work cleanly
The numbing wearing off partway through the session
Extra redness or sensitivity after the cream wears off
This does not mean numbing cream is always bad. It just means it needs to be discussed before the appointment.
When might numbing cream be considered?
Numbing cream is not automatically suitable for every tattoo, every placement or every artist.
It may be considered in some situations, but only after your artist has looked at the tattoo idea, placement, skin, session length and the product you are thinking of using.
Even if you have used numbing cream before, please do not assume it is okay for your next tattoo. Different tattoos, artists and placements can respond differently.
The safest answer is simple, ask before you use it.
When should numbing cream be avoided?
Avoid numbing cream if your artist has told you not to use it.
You should also avoid applying it to broken, irritated, sunburnt, scratched, freshly shaved, rashy or damaged skin.
If you have allergies, sensitive skin, medical conditions, heart issues, are pregnant, are taking medication, or are unsure whether a topical anaesthetic is safe for you, speak with a doctor or pharmacist before using it.
Do not use more product than directed. Do not leave it on longer than directed. Do not mix multiple numbing products.
Does numbing cream affect tattoo healing?
Numbing cream is used before tattooing, not as aftercare.
Once the tattoo is finished, do not keep applying numbing cream to the fresh tattoo. Fresh tattoos need proper cleaning and aftercare, not extra anaesthetic products.
After your session, follow your artist’s instructions and read our tattoo aftercare guide if you need a refresher.
How should I prepare if I want to use numbing cream?
First, message the studio before your appointment.
Let us know:
What tattoo you are getting
Where it is going
How long the session may be
What product you are thinking of using
Whether you have used it before
Whether you have sensitive skin or allergies
Your artist can then tell you whether they are comfortable with it and whether there is anything specific you need to know.
You can also read our tattoo preparation guide before your appointment.
Is numbing cream allowed for every artist?
No. Each artist may have their own preference.
At Inkdulgence, the safest approach is to ask first. Some artists may be okay with approved use for certain tattoos. Others may prefer to tattoo without it, especially for designs where skin texture and stencil stability are important.
If you are booking with a specific artist, ask before the appointment day so there are no surprises.
Can numbing cream help with long tattoo sessions?
It can help some clients at the start of a session, but it may wear off before the tattoo is finished.
For long sessions, preparation matters too. Eat properly, drink water, get a good sleep, bring snacks and wear suitable clothing. These basics often make a bigger difference than people expect.
Numbing cream is not a replacement for good tattoo preparation.
Our honest advice
Tattoo numbing cream can be useful for some clients, but it is not something to use casually without checking first.
The best approach is simple:
Ask your artist before using it
Only use products as directed
Do not apply it to damaged or irritated skin
Do not overuse it
Do not use it as aftercare
Tell your artist if your skin reacts badly
A good tattoo experience comes from communication, preparation and the right artist for the job.
